Best Day Tours in Ghent in Winter

Ghent is a port city in northwest Belgium, at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers. During the Middle Ages it was a prominent city-state. Today it’s a university town and cultural hub. Its pedestrianized center is known for medieval architecture such as 12th-century Gravensteen castle and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie river harbor.

1. 1898 The Post 3* – Hotels Near Ghent Christmas Market

1898 The Post

Boutique hotel 1898 The Post offers accommodation in an iconic, historical building in the heart of Ghent. It is situated in the former post office.

The hotel has 37 rooms and suites that are decorated elegantly with antique furniture. They also feature high ceilings or sloped roofs. All rooms & suites offer views of the city, king-size beds, free WiFi, modern technology and luxury amenities.

Guests can come to The Kitchen to relax, work, or enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

It is a shared area, with an open fireplace overlooking Ghent. The Kitchen offers an American buffet breakfast, a selection of fresh and seasonal light dishes for lunch and homemade pastries for afternoon tea.

Along the Leie River in the historic center, a 3-minute walk from transit stop Gent Korenmarkt perron 3, this upscale hotel is set in the upper floors of Ghent’s historic post office building.

Refined rooms have antique furnishings, and offer free Wi-Fi, flat-screens, sound systems and minibars, as well as marble bathrooms. Upgraded rooms add sitting areas, soaking tubs and city views.

An American-style breakfast buffet (fee) is served in a cozy dining room that has a fireplace; lunch and afternoon tea are available. There’s also a cosmopolitan cocktail bar offering skyline views, plus an open-air terrace with seating.

Located in the very heart of Ghent, the hotel offers its guests some of the best views in the city. The 38 guest’s rooms are decorated in a warm style- with high ceilings, dark green walls and antique furniture – complementing the building’s late 19th century architecture.

With great views through the grand window, the restored wood and indirect lighting create a cozy atmosphere accented with a contemporary touch of freshness.

Getting there – we arrived at Brussels airport and got a train from there to ‘Gent Sint Pieters’ then from there walked outside of the station to the tram stop where we got the number 1 tram to Ghent Town centre, get off at stop ‘Gent Korenmarkt perron 5’, and it’s a 2 minute walk to hotel.

The total travel time was around 1hr 40mins, probably quicker in a cab, but we prefer to do try out local public transport rather than just hopping in a cab.

Location – Amazing, couldn’t be more central. Right in the midst of the Christmas market, we could see the big wheel from our window.

Room itself – Amazing! As soon as we walked in the room we were in love, the decor and layout of the room were beautiful.

Hotel communal area – The hotel decor was amazing throughout, and the smell was delightful (must find out what they use!).

They also had a nice spot where you could sit down and chill/ read, as it was Christmas when we stayed they had a massive Christmas tree there which made the area even better.

I couldn’t recommend this hotel enough, especially if you’re considering booking around Christmas market time.

Remarkable and interesting conversion of the old building on the waterfront. And with the Christmas market right outside, when we stayed. Amazing room (Postcard) and very comfortable. Great, and generous breakfast.

Situated perfectly – and I do mean it couldn’t be any better- in the heart of old Ghent you only need to walk out of the door to be immersed in Christmas markets and lovely shops. The staff are fantastic at The Post; attentive, polite, and excelling at good old customer service.

The building itself has been beautifully transformed from a former post office into a well-designed haven of relaxed low-lit opulence.

Bear in mind it is indeed rather low-lit; all the intimate lighting and low seating is perfect for couples on a romantic break (we loved it) but may not be ideal for those with sight or mobility issues. We stayed in a duplex room which was very tastefully furnished with a large bed and excellent toiletries, a decent amount of space and a high-end mini bar, a lot of thought has gone into making this hotel really good indeed.

Much has been- or surely will be – written about the superb cocktail bar in the the hotel, The Cobbler. It really is great. The cocktails, ambience, and staff make this a great place to relax.

I doubt there can be a more sophisticated bar in Ghent. Our room was excellent, with a large HD tv with BBC 1 and 2 on tap, my only slight criticism would be a lack of a hand basin in the toilet in the duplex rooms, having to nip upstairs to wash hands is a little bit of a pain.

But seriously, this is a great hotel, and probably, along with the city itself, a bit under most people’s radar.

There are plenty things to do and see in Ghent.
Never disappointed with Ibis hotels – and this one is no exception. The staff on reception were lovely and our room overlooked the Cathedral and the Christmas market, yet was still quiet, though we were woken up by the cathedral bells but what a lovely way to be woken!
And only 100m or so to the bus to the station. We didn’t pay for breakfast which I thought was rather expensive but I’m sure if we had paid, it would have been lovely.
Stayed here beginning of Dec for the Christmas Market. Took train from Brussels to Ghent & then the tram. Fab location opposite the cathedral & Christmas Market. Room was succinct, room for 2 cases & could move easily about without bumping into each other.
Shelves & hanging space for clothes, tv & free Wi-fi, Shame no kettle etc. Bed v v comfy.
Good sized bright bathroom with lovely shower – great water pressure. Liquid soap / shampoo. Room & bathroom cleaned.
Buffet breakfast, eat all you want. Good choice. Refill drinks.

The hotel is located in the city center in walking distance to all tourist attraction but, at the same time, situated in a quiet side street. The hotel has a very stylish wine bar (Parole) with a nice atrium where we finished our day with a nice glass of wine. Carine also gave us tips to great restaurants, which are also very close by; definitely walking distance.

The room: Clean. Big enough for us while spending most of the day outside.

Maison Margot is a trendy spot with a great location, very comfortable and clean. We also love the decoration and the bar. Ghent is an incredible city to visit!
